ESA spacecraft may help unravel cosmic mystery

— 13 Nov 2009 14:15 | Astronomy

When Europe's comet chaser Rosetta swings by Earth tomorrow for a critical gravity assist, tracking data will be collected to precisely measure the satellite's change in orbital energy.... — full story

Artist view of ESA's Rosetta cometary probe. The spacecraft is covered with dark thermal insulation in order to keep its warmth while venturing into the coldness of the outer Solar System, beyond Mars orbit, (c) ESARosetta observes asteroid Steins

— 6 Sep 2008 21:39 | Astronomy

ESA's comet chaser, Rosetta, last night flew by a small body in the main asteroid belt, asteroid Steins, collecting a wealth of information about this rare type of minor Solar System... — full story

Asteroid Steins seen from a distance of 800 km, taken by the OSIRIS imaging system from two different perspectives. The effective diameter of the asteroid is 5 km, approximately as predicted. At the top of the asteroid (as shown in this image), a large crater, approximately 1.5-km in size, can be seen. Scientists were amazed that the asteroid survived the impact that was responsible for the crater, (c) ESA; MPS for OSIRIS Team MPS, UPM, LAM, IAA, RSSD, INTA, UPM, DASP, IDAAsteroid Steins: A diamond in space

— 6 Sep 2008 14:40 | Astronomy

The first images from Rosetta's OSIRIS imaging system and VIRTIS infrared spectrometer were derived from raw data this morning and have delivered spectacular results. 'Steins looks... — full story

Asteroid (2867) Steins, (c) ESARosetta meets asteroid Steins

— 25 Aug 2008 12:03 | Astronomy

ESA's Rosetta spacecraft will make a historic encounter with asteroid (2867) Steins on 5 September 2008. The doors of ESA's European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany,... — full story

Asteroid (2867) Steins, (c) ESARosetta spacecraft starts tracking asteroid Steins

— 4 Aug 2008 13:23 | Astronomy

Heading toward its first target-asteroid, (2867) Steins, ESA's Rosetta spacecraft has started using its cameras to visually track the asteroid and eventually determine its orbit with... — full story

— 24 Jul 2008 15:06 | Astronomy

Engineers at ESA's European Space Operations Centre in Germany are working to a tight deadline as ESA's comet-chasing spacecraft Rosetta swings steadily closer to a spectacular asteroid... — full story

Rosetta goes into passive cruise mode on the way to the asteroid belt. It observes the asteroids from a distance of a few thousand kilometres. Data recorded on board is transmitted to Earth after the fly-by, (c) ESA, AOES MedialabRosetta spacecraft awakes from hibernation for asteroid encounter

— 3 Jul 2008 14:32 | Astronomy

Spacecraft controllers have just awoken Rosetta from hibernation to prepare for its encounter with asteroid (2867) Steins on 5 September. ESA's comet chaser will study the relatively... — full story

After its closest approach to Earth, Rosetta looked back and took a number of images using the OSIRIS Narrow Angle Camera (NAC), (c) ESARosetta: The true colours of the Earth

— 26 Nov 2007 15:48 | Astronomy

True colour images of Earth as seen by Rosetta's OSIRIS camera are now available. The pictures were taken on 13 November during the swing-by, and on 15 November, as Rosetta left on... — full story
