Venus Express adds to evidence for atmospheric water loss by Earth's twin

— 16 Sep 2009 00:02 | Astronomy

Observations by the European Space Agency's Venus Express mission have provided strong new evidence that the solar wind has stripped away significant quantities of water from Earth's... — full story

New map hints at Venus' wet, volcanic past

— 14 Jul 2009 17:16 | Astronomy

Venus Express has charted the first map of Venus' southern hemisphere at infrared wavelengths. The new map hints that our neighbouring world may once have been more Earth-like, with... — full story

Artist vision of a collision of Venus with the Earth. Due to the chaotic evolution of the planetary orbits in the Solar System, a close approach or even a collision could occur between Venus and the Earth in less than 5 billion years, although the odds are small, (c) J Vidal-Madjar; planet textures from NASA, IMCCE-CNRSEarth in collision: The chances are relatively small

— 10 Jun 2009 17:00 | Astronomy

The chaotic nature of the Solar System is known to lead to changes in planetary orbits, and has in the past influenced the structure of the Solar System that we see today. According... — full story

This artist's impression shows Venus Express focussing on studying the peculiar atmosphere of Venus, with a precision never achieved before. In doing so, the mission is making the first ever use of the so called 'infrared windows' present in Venus' atmosphere; they are narrow bands in the atmospheric spectrum, discovered in the 1980s thanks to ground observations. Looking through these 'windows' Venus Express is able to gather precious information about the lower layers of the atmosphere and even the surface, (c) ESA - AOES MedialabWatching Venus glow in the dark

— 25 Feb 2009 13:50 | Astronomy

ESA's Venus Express spacecraft has observed an eerie glow in the night-time atmosphere of Venus. This infrared light comes from nitric oxide and is showing scientists that the atmosphere... — full story

Artist's impression of Mars Express, (c) Alex LutkusESA extends missions studying Mars, Venus and Earth's magnetosphere

— 11 Feb 2009 10:20 | Astronomy

ESA's Science Programme Committee has extended the operations of ESA's Mars Express, Venus Express and Cluster missions until 31 December 2009. The decision to extend the three successful... — full story

Where did Venus's water go?

— 18 Dec 2008 12:02 | Astronomy

Venus Express has made the first detection of an atmospheric loss process on Venus's day-side. Last year, the spacecraft revealed that most of the lost atmosphere escapes from the night-side.... — full story

Venus's southern hemisphere, (c) VMC: ESA, MPS, DLR, IDA VIRTIS: ESA, VIRTIS, INAF-IASF/Obs. de Paris-LESIAVenus comes to life in the ultraviolet and the infrared

— 3 Dec 2008 18:00 | Astronomy

A pale dot to the human eye, Venus, Earth's twin planet comes to life in the ultraviolet and the infrared. New data and images from the Venus Express spacecraft reveal a clearer picture... — full story

Team of scientists manage to measure wind details of Venus

— 4 Sep 2008 19:09 | Astronomy

Venus is a planet similar in size to the Earth. Nevertheless, it is quite different in other aspects. On the one hand, it spins very slowly on its axis, taking 224 terrestrial days... — full story

Venus Express is studying largely unknown phenomena in the Venusian atmosphere like never before. Its suite of instruments is also digging into the interaction between the solar wind and the planetary environment. In addition, the mission is gathering glimpses of the planet's surface, which is strictly coupled with its dense atmosphere, (c) ESA (AOES Medialab)Hydroxyl detected in the Venusian atmosphere

— 15 May 2008 13:19 | Astronomy

Venus Express has detected the molecule hydroxyl on another planet for the first time. This detection gives scientists an important new tool to unlock the workings of Venus's dense... — full story

— 4 Apr 2008 15:24 | Astronomy

ESA's Venus Express has measured a highly variable quantity of the volcanic gas sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere of Venus. Scientists must now decide whether this is evidence for active... — full story
