Tweeting shooting stars

— 11 Aug 2009 14:06 | Astronomy

Amateur astronomers across the UK are preparing to tweet the world's first mass participation meteor star party, as part of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009). Led by... — full story

Image of part of a stellar remnant whose explosion was recorded in 185 A.D. By studying this remnant in detail, a team of astronomers was able to solve the mystery of the Milky Way's super-efficient particle accelerators. The team shows that the shock wave visible in this area is very efficient at accelerating particles and the energy used in this process matches the number of cosmic rays observed on Earth. North is toward the top right and east to the top left. The image is about six arc minutes across, (c) ESO/E. — 26 Jun 2009 11:30 | Astronomy

Thanks to a unique 'ballistic study' that combines data from ESO's Very Large Telescope and NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, astronomers have now solved a long-standing mystery of... — full story

Red giant star Betelgeuse is mysteriously shrinking

— 10 Jun 2009 10:12 | Astronomy

The red supergiant star Betelgeuse, the bright reddish star in the constellation Orion, has steadily shrunk over the past 15 years, according to University of California, Berkeley,... — full story

The first of the second generation Very Large Telescope instrument, X-shooter, is now ready to start routine observations. X-shooter is unique among astronomical instruments installed at large telescopes, as it can record the entire spectrum of a celestial object in one shot - from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared - with great sensitivity and spectral resolution, (c) ESOMost efficient spectrograph to shoot the southern skies

First two ALMA antennas successfully linked

— 6 May 2009 18:03 | Astronomy

On 30 April, the team observed the first 'interferometric fringes' of an astronomical source by linking two 12-metre diameter ALMA antennas, together with the other critical parts of... — full story

The IRAM 30 m Telescope at Pico Veleta in southern Spain. Observations with this telescope at millimetre wavelengths led to the detection of both molecules, ethyl formate (C2H5OCHO) and n-propyl cyanide (C3H7CN), (c) IRAMTwo highly complex organic molecules detected in space
