This is an artist's impression of the Jupiter-size extrasolar planet, HD 189733b, being eclipsed by its parent star. Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have measured carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide in the planet's atmosphere. The planet is a 'hot Jupiter,' which is so close to its star that it completes an orbit in only 2.2 days. This type of observation is best done when the planet's orbit carries it behind the star (as seen from Earth), which allows an opportunity to subtract the light of the star alone (when the planet is blocked) from that of the star and planet together prior to eclipse. This allows astronomers to isolate the infrared emission of the planet and make spectroscopic observations that chemically analyse the day-side atmosphere. The planet is too hot for life, as we know it. But under the right conditions, on a more Earth-like world, carbon dioxide can indicate the presence of extraterrestrial life. This observation demonstrates that chemical biotracers can be detected by space telescope observations, (c) ESA, NASA, M. Kornmesser (ESA/Hubble), and STScIHubble finds carbon dioxide on an extrasolar planet

— 10 Dec 2008 09:22 | Astronomy

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has discovered carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a planet orbiting another star. This is an important step along the trail of finding the chemical biotracers... — full story

Computer models show that while (tectonic) uplift of the Rocky Mountains may have contributed to increased ice cover on Greenland, this change was small in comparison with the ice sheet caused by a decrease in carbon dioxide, (c) Dan LuntWhy is Greenland covered in ice?

— 27 Aug 2008 17:00 | Environment

There have been many articles about the effects of global warming on the Greenland's ice-sheet, but there is still great uncertainty as to why there is an ice-sheet there at all. Reporting... — full story

Forests could benefit when fall colour comes late

— 23 Jan 2008 11:21 | Environment

Do those fall colours seem to show up later and later - if at all? Scientists say we can blame increasing amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere for prolonging the growing season... — full story
