Precise picture of early Universe supports 'dark matter' theory

— 3 Nov 2009 09:02 | Astronomy

A detailed picture of the seeds of structures in the universe has been unveiled by an international team co-led by a Cardiff University scientist... — full story

Astronomers obtained this portrait of Barnard's Galaxy using the Wide Field Imager attached to the 2.2-metre MPG/ESO telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in northern Chile. Also known as NGC 6822, this dwarf irregular galaxy is one of the Milky Way's galactic neighbours. The dwarf galaxy has no shortage of stellar splendour and pyrotechnics. Reddish nebulae in this image reveal regions of active star formation, wherein young, hot stars heat up nearby gas clouds. Also prominent in the upper left of this new image is a striking bubble-shaped nebula. At the nebula's centre, a clutch of massive, scorching stars send waves of matter smashing into surrounding interstellar material, generating a glowing structure that appears ring-like from our perspective. Other similar ripples of heated matter thrown out by feisty young stars are dotted across Barnard's Galaxy, (c) ESOThe Milky Way's tiny but tough galactic neighbour

In the new ESO image, Barnard's Galaxy glows beneath a sea of foreground stars in the direction of the constellation of Sagittarius (the Archer). At the relatively close distance of... — full story

Heart of a galaxy emits gamma rays

— 3 Oct 2009 09:36 | Astronomy

Quite a few distant galaxies turn out to be cosmic delivery rooms. Large numbers of massive stars are born in the hearts of these starburst galaxies, and later explode as supernovae.... — full story

Cosmic rays hit space age high

— 30 Sep 2009 15:29 | Astronomy

Planning a trip to Mars? Take plenty of shielding. According to sensors on NASA's ACE (Advanced Composition Explorer) spacecraft, galactic cosmic rays have just hit a Space Age high... — full story

The massive star factory known as the Trifid Nebula was captured in all its glory with the Wide-Field Imager camera attached to the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in northern Chile. So named for the dark dust bands that trisect its glowing heart, the Trifid Nebula is a rare combination of three nebulae types that reveal the fury of freshly formed stars and point to more star birth in the future, (c) ESOTrifid triple treat

— 27 Aug 2009 13:36 | Astronomy

Smouldering several thousand light-years away in the constellation of Sagittarius (the Archer), the Trifid Nebula presents a compelling portrait of the early stages of a star's life,... — full story

LIGO listens for gravitational echoes of the birth of the universe

— 20 Aug 2009 12:52 | Astronomy

The violent youth of solar proxies steer course of genesis of life

— 11 Aug 2009 12:16 | Astronomy

Just how rare life is in the Universe is one of the key questions in the natural sciences today. By pulling in multidisciplinary expertise from biology, geology, physics and astronomy,... — full story

This frame from the simulation shows the X-rays produced by a black hole (white) and its effects on nearby gas (blue). This scene occurs 400 million years after the universe formed, (c) KIPAC/SLAC/M. Alvarez, T. Abel and J. WiseFirst black holes kept to a strict diet

— 11 Aug 2009 12:01 | Astronomy

A new supercomputer simulation designed to track the fate of the universe's first black holes finds that, counter to expectations, they couldn't efficiently gorge themselves on nearby... — full story

Cosmic meddling with the clouds by seven-day magic

— 1 Aug 2009 17:35 | Environment

Billions of tonnes of water droplets vanish from the atmosphere, as if by magic, in events that reveal in detail how the Sun and the stars control our everyday clouds. Researchers of... — full story
