The search for a mysterious substance which makes up most of the Universe could soon be at an end, according to new research. Dark matter is believed to account for 85 per cent of the... — full story

Listening to dark matter

— 16 Oct 2008 12:30 | Astronomy

A team of researchers in Canada have made a bold stride in the struggle to detect dark matter. The PICASSO collaboration has documented the discovery of a significant difference between... — full story

MACS J0025 formed after an enormously energetic collision between two large clusters. The image is a composite of separate exposures made by Hubble Space Telescope ACS and WFPC2 detectors and the Chandra ACIS detector. The Hubble images were taken on 5 November 2006 and 6 June 2007. Using the visible-light images from Hubble, astronomers were able to infer the distribution of the total mass - dark and ordinary matter. Hubble was used to map the dark matter (coloured in blue) using a technique known as gravitational lensing. The Chandra data enabled the astronomers to accurately map the position of the ordinary matter, mostly in the form of hot gas, which glows brightly in X-rays (pink), (c) NASA, ESA, CXC, M. — 27 Oct 2007 08:33 | Astronomy

For almost 75 years, astronomers have believed that the Universe has a large amount of unseen or 'dark' matter, thought to make up about five-sixths of the matter in the cosmos. With... — full story
