D'Onghia and her colleagues simulated encounters between galaxies to determine how dwarf galaxies lose much of their stars and gas. Top row: Interaction between a dwarf galaxy orbiting around a larger galaxy with 100 times its mass. Only the stars are plotted. The upper left panel illustrates the initial set up where the two dwarfs approach one another. The upper middle panel gives the state of the system after 2 billion years, and the upper right panel shows the appearance of the galaxies after 7 billion years. Bottom row: Shown is the orbit of the same small galaxy (in white) around the Milky Way today (in yellow), which has 10,000 times its mass, (c) Elena D'Onghia (CfA)Cosmic dance helps galaxies lose weight

Living fossils hold record of 'supermassive' kick

— 10 Jul 2009 15:28 | Astronomy

The tight cluster of stars surrounding a supermassive black hole after it has been violently kicked out of a galaxy represents a new kind of astronomical object and a fossil record... — full story

Intense heat killed the Universe's would-be galaxies, researchers say

— 1 Jul 2009 04:07 | Astronomy

Our Milky Way galaxy only survived because it was already immersed in a large clump of dark matter which trapped gases inside it, scientists led by Durham University's Institute for... — full story

Largest ever survey of very distant galaxy clusters completed

This composite image shows one of the brightest objects observed in a study of 29 blobs located in a single field. Glowing hydrogen gas in the blob is shown by a Lyman-alpha optical image (coloured yellow) from the Subaru telescope. A galaxy located in the blob is visible in a broadband optical image (white) from the Hubble Space Telescope and an infrared image from the Spitzer Space Telescope (red). Finally, the Chandra X-ray Observatory image (blue) shows evidence for a growing supermassive black hole in the centre of the galaxy. Radiation and outflows from this active black hole are lighting up and heating the gas in the blob, (c) X-ray: NASA, CXC, Durham Univ., D. Alexander et al.; optical: NASA, ESA, STScI, IoA, S. Chapman et al.; Lyman-alpha optical: NAOJ, Subaru, Tohoku Univ., T. Hayashino et al.; infrared: NASA, JPL-Caltech, Durham Univ., J. Geach et al.Galaxies coming of age in cosmic blobs

This deep image of the Virgo Cluster obtained by Chris Mihos and his colleagues using the Burrell Schmidt telescope shows the diffuse light between the galaxies belonging to the cluster. North is up, east to the left. The dark spots indicate where bright foreground stars were removed from the image, (c) ESOGiant galaxy Messier 87 finally sized up
