Apple launches iPad

— 28 January 11:21

Apple introduced iPad, a revolutionary device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books and much more. iPad's responsive high-resolution Multi-Touch display lets users physically interact with applications and content. iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds - thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook. iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for the iPad, and will run almost all of the over 140,000 apps in the App Store. iPad will be available in late March starting at the breakthrough price of just $499... — full story

Image shows a bright blue-green point of light from a single plasmon laser emanating from the optical setup. These semiconductor lasers - the world's smallest - are extremely efficient, so the small amount of scattered light is clearly visible, even in ambient room lighting. Saturation of the camera image and the diffraction limit of light give the impression of a larger spot, (c) Xiang Zhang LabResearchers create world's smallest semiconductor laser

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have reached a new milestone in laser physics by creating the world's smallest semiconductor laser, capable of generating visible... — full story

Researchers are developing a new class of tiny mechanical devices containing vibrating, hair-thin structures that could be used to filter electronic signals in cell phones and for other more exotic applications. The work is done inside a vacuum chamber sitting on top of a special vibration-absorbing platform critical to making the precise measurements. A tiny prototype, roughly comparable in size to a grain of sand, is pictured on the monitor at right. The device is an example of a microelectromechanical system, or a MEMS, which contains tiny moving parts, (c) Birck Nanotechnology Centre, Purdue UniversityTiny 'MEMS' devices to filter, amplify electronic signals

Organic solar concentrators collect and focus different colours of sunlight. Solar cells can be attached to the edges of the plates. By collecting light over their full surface and concentrating it at their edges, these devices reduce the required area of solar cells and consequently, the cost of solar power. Stacking multiple concentrators allows the optimisation of solar cells at each wavelength, increasing the overall power output, (c) Donna CoveneyDye-coated glass to channel energy into solar cells
