Bernstein Centres for Computational Neuroscience

Discovering the complex structure of the brain, Computational Neuroscience combines experiments, analyses of data, computer simulations, and theory building. The Bernstein Centres for Computational Neuroscience in Berlin, Freiburg, Goettingen, and Munich have been established in 2004 by the German Ministry of Education and Research to accomplish the goal to advance this promising field of research.

Unconscious decisions in the brain

— 14 Apr 2008 11:58 | Health

Already several seconds before we consciously make a decision its outcome can be predicted from unconscious activity in the brain. This is shown by a study of scientists from the Max…

Snakes can hear sound from the sand, even in stereo

— 30 Jan 2008 16:17 | Biology

It is often believed that snakes cannot hear. This presumption is fed by the fact that snakes lack an outer ear and that scientific evidence of snakes responding to sound is scarce.…

How thoughts arise

— 8 Jan 2008 15:35 | Biology

What makes up a thought? First of all, it is a firework of neuronal activity, produced by neurones, the building blocks of the brain, which encode and transmit information in the form…

The brain on the edge of chaos

— 18 Nov 2007 18:38 | Biology

Researchers in Goettingen have shown how avalanches of neuronal discharge occur in the brain. Many systems of nature automatically head for a critical state which can be characterised…
