Surprise role of nuclear structure protein in development

— 25 Nov 2011 09:00 | Biology

Scientists have long held theories about the importance of proteins called B-type lamins in the process of embryonic stem cells replicating and differentiating into different varieties…

Earth's core deprived of oxygen

— 23 Nov 2011 19:46 | Geology and palaeontology

The composition of the Earth's core remains a mystery. Scientists know that the liquid outer core consists mainly of iron, but it is believed that small amounts of some other elements…

Formaldehyde: Poison could have set the stage for the origins of life

— 6 Apr 2011 17:22 | Chemistry

Formaldehyde, a poison and a common molecule throughout the universe, is likely the source of the solar system's organic carbon solids - abundant in both comets and asteroids. Scientists…

Cutting carbon dioxide helps prevent drying

— 28 Mar 2011 18:42 | Environment

Recent climate modelling has shown that reducing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would give the Earth a wetter climate in the short term. New research from Carnegie…

Delving into manganite conductivity

— 10 Feb 2011 19:19 | Physics

Chemical compounds called manganites have been studied for many years since the discovery of colossal magnetoresistance, a property that promises important applications in the fields…

Unexpected exoskeleton remnants found in Palaeozoic fossils

— 8 Feb 2011 16:39 | Geology and palaeontology

Surprising new research shows that, contrary to conventional belief, remains of chitin-protein complex - structural materials containing protein and polysaccharide - are present in…

Nailing down a crucial plant signalling system

— 23 Jan 2011 19:35 | Biology

Plant biologists have discovered the last major element of the series of chemical signals that one class of plant hormones, called brassinosteroids, send from a protein on the surface…

War, plague no match for deforestation in driving CO2 buildup

— 21 Jan 2011 19:29 | Environment

Genghis Khan and his Mongol hordes had an impact on the global carbon cycle as big as today's annual demand for gasoline. The Black Death, on the other hand, came and went too quickly…

How do you make lithium melt in the cold?

— 10 Jan 2011 18:51 | Physics

Sophisticated tools allow scientists to subject the basic elements of matter to conditions drastic enough to modify their behaviour. By doing this, they can expand our understanding…

Meteorite just one piece of an unknown celestial body

— 16 Dec 2010 17:07 | Astronomy

Scientists from all over the world are taking a second, more expansive, look at the car-sized asteroid that exploded over Sudan's Nubian Desert in 2008. Initial research was focused…
